no 1 Video Company Durban, lights part 2

Hi guys, no 1 video company durban needs to discuss the second half of lights on set, when how and why.

Now of course we all know we need to use lights if a room or set area is too dark.  But we can also create mood using lights.  Harsh lighting might be used for action sequence where there is flashing bright lights.  Soft lights can be used for a drama or romance where we want faces lighted bringing out nice features that is soft on the eye.

Have you ever seen a face lit with harsh light creating shadow to create a mean look or evil.

Lighting alone can set the mood for a scene or kinda make you judge the character without even the person speaking yet.  Look at the above?  Do you trust the man?  Do you think he is likeable or approachable?  I wouldnt like to be dealing with him.  Half the face is in darkness and there is harsh shadows, dark lines across his face.  I

Now look at the image above.  Nice soft light is used to light the character, gives it a nice soft approachable look.

This is the basics of how lights create mood in a scene and the creative control we have to set the feel we want from a scene.

Documentary lighting might require you to light a scene because its too dark without light but give a thought to getting creative with your lights.   Cameras today can operate much better in low light conditions as compared to 15 years ago.  But that does not mean you don’t want lights at all.

Well thats it for now guys, hope this blog helps you with your next video production and the creative ability lights offer for your production.

no1 video company durban, lighting on set

Hi guys

Welcome to no 1 video company durban, www.gcv.co.za, lets talk video lighting.  When are lights used and for what purpose? How has lighting on set changed over the last 20 years?

I will tell you when I was studying 1997 – 1999, there were 2 lights available for us to use, Redheads and Blondes.

redhead

A redhead is a 800 watt tungsten light with barndoors, a very sturdy light that was used wherever a shoot was going on.  Adjustments allow movement for the light as well as a bulb adjuster which moves the bulb forward and back therefore more / less spot.

Now, if a stronger light was needed we used a Blonde, this was a bigger light, brighter and heavier than the Redhead.

Blonde

The Blonde is a 200 watt tungsten light ideal for stage lighting or needing to light a big area.  It has a similar design to the Redhead with barn doors, adjustable parts and both lights mount onto light stands.

Now I am sure you can figure out the names given to the lights…red for the red casing and blonde for the blonde / yellow casing.  I dont recall using the Blonde too much, our video shoots were smaller and more intimate.  These lights are still used on sets to day but over time lights have made advancement with LED  (light emitting diode)

So the above is typically what is used today, LED panel on a light stand either plugged into power or battery operated.

The lights brightness can be adjusted as well as the colour temperature (outdoor / indoor light).  These lights can run on battery which means no cables which is a big positive.  And they last very long due to LED low power usage.  So today LED is the way to go.  Another positive for LED is they emit very little heat compared to Redhead or Blonde.  LEDS seldom ever need to be replaced unlike tungsten bulbs.

I hope the above helps when you deciding what light to use.  We will discuss using lights in the next blog.

Until then guys…happy filming

These lights are gonna be so much fun.  Always have lights in your shoot, they offer so much creative control of your production.  I cant wait to show you guys the finished product…please be patient while we edit and fine tune the visuals.

The voice over has already been done as well as the titles for the production.  Timing is on 40 seconds which includes quite a long title at the end of the advert for contact details.

Recce of the location has been done but a 2nd one will happen this monday.

While we on the subject…What to look for on a recce visit.

  1.  A recce gives you an idea of the location layout, lighting, whether it be natural daylight or indoor artificial lighting, shadows.
  2.   What areas to shoot and how to get power and lights to those areas eg…are there plugpoints for lights, plugging in camera or monitors?
  3.   Are there noise distractions eg…traffic, sirens, drilling or any noise that might occur from filming.
  4.   Are all areas accessible for filming?  ie a factory might have certain departments not accessible to film crew at certain times such as lunchtime.

Those points above are just a few pointers to look for on a recce.

Please feel free to send any extra info you have regarding recce shoot that we can to our next video blog.

GCV Productions, video company durban and Trail of Lights

Hi guys

Today’s blog is all about no 1 video company durban and Durban Botanic Gardens Trail of Lights.

LOGO

This is a very special event that has an awesome cause sponsoring selected charities that attend the event.  Trail of Lights runs for 7 nights at Durban Botanic Gardens from 6 pm till 9 pm.  GCV Productions, video company durban,  was asked to cover the event to use for marketing the event and spreading the word something special was happening in Durban.  My blog will be from a video point of view and not an organisational one so guys I’m talking about the good and few challenges we experienced making a video.  I will include the video so that you can see the final awesome product

The biggest challenge is filming at night, not an easy feat when you are on the go over a few acres of land.  Settings on the camera must be so that gain is not coming into the video.  Yes the trees are lit but with small fairy lights, not big floodlights.  Durban was also experiencing heavy rain for the few days before the event so there was lots of water around which is difficult to see at night.

I decided to shoot the whole event on the DJI Osmo and the Z Axis which gives the awesome feel of the camera flying through the trees

The Osmo and Z Axis were awesome to use and made the job very easy.  Shots were quick and I got to move throught the Trail of Lights very quickly so that a couple of runs can be done.

I decided against interviews….not sure why but just felt that we can do a video without talking heads and the organisers were happy to leave them out so as to not steer towards favouritsm for some charities and not others.

Welcome to 2018

Welcome to the 1st GCV Productions blog for 2018.   It has been a while since I last blogged so its good to be back and blogging.  Hope our readers have been good and hitting 2018 hard.  Whats new in 2018?   No new gear as we speak but there will be purchases soon.  So we still running with the DJI Osmo, the Sony NX3, the H5 Zoom recorder.   We will load a video for you guys to look at on this blog.   The video was filmed for the client Boxer, at Seula Zimbili, KZN North Coast.   The Boxer Youth Leadership gives children the special experience of learning together, growing together while building friends and teammates.

GCV Productions is priviledged to film them and join them for the 5 days at the camp.  What a wonderful experience, I hope every child realises the gift they been given.  A memorable video is created for them to not forget the awesome experience

The approach is to use the osmo for the action shots and the Sony NX3 for the interviews.
